This project is envisioned as a book and accompanying website with content in various formats to accommodate different access needs.
A variety of contributions are encouraged:
- Written essays and interviews for an anthology of practices (as opposed to theory).
- Visual art, sound, video, and other written forms for publication on an accompanying website.
Contributions for the anthology will come from anarchists with working knowledge of making anarchism practical and everyday. However, we must aim to reach anarchists with less experience and those who fear their perceptions of anarchism. Therefore, the broader aim of this project is to coordinate supplementary materials and events such as accessible, virtual skill-sharing sessions and discussion groups.
It will take a group effort to expand this project. Anyone interested may volunteer for:
- ASL interpretation and captioning for live events and pre-recorded videos.
- Creation and management of a website using the platform MediaWiki. It will include a glossary, a hybrid index of the book and web content, an informative wiki with background context about disability and anarchism, and non-written content such as videos, images, and more.
- Wiki contributions.
- Indexing and copy-editing the book.
- Project promotion.
- Video editing.
- Virtual event facilitation.
Things to know:
- An as-yet unsecured press will publish the anthology. There may be options for open access, which would make the anthology freely available (and encourage accessible formats).
- Contributors should use a tool such as WriteClearly by Open Advocate to ensure language is understandable to people with low levels of English literacy. Submitting two versions (Plain Language and otherwise) of each contribution are encouraged if submitting in Plain Language alone is a barrier.
- Contributions may undergo a peer-review process by other disabled anarchists.
- Priority will go to contributions from people who self-identify as disabled.
- This project is committed to highlighting contributions from disabled people with as many different backgrounds and experiences as possible. Contributors may be asked to disclose aspects of their background and experience when submitting their contributions. This information will only be published if a contributor includes it within a biography or artist statement they provide for publication.
- Contributions from anarcho-capitalists, libertarians, bigots, and the like are not welcome.
- Last, please note that this is entirely a volunteer-run project – no one is getting paid, including the editors and project coordinators, unless outside funding is secured. There is the possibility of using crowdfunding to pay contributors for their submissions and labor; research on the logistics is underway.
Please share this call for contributions with disabled anarchists, disabled people who may find this intriguing, and any anarchist who believes that a better world is possible for everyone.
Contributions should be submitted here (not yet available).
Deadline: Written or multimedia ideas, proposals, abstracts, or outlines are due by September 1, 2024.
